Digital Media Player Firmware Update

What Does This Do?

This utility installs an update to the firmware for the Digital Media Player and provides the following changes and benefits:

Improvements over version 11:

  • Adds support for the Music Center app
  • Adds a feature that allows song titles to be displayed when using either USB1 or USB2
  • Adds a feature that allows caller names to be displayed when using the Bluetooth Hands-free Calling feature
  • Add the ability to choose the AUTO or OFF launch options for the Music Center app, from within the Sony App setting menu.
  • Adds a feature that allows the lights and button illumination to be turned off to aid in theft prevention
  • Adds a feature that allows you to adjust the button illumination brightness
  • Adds support for native DSD 11.2MHz/1bit playback with a NW-WM1Z or NW-WM1A Walkman player using the USB DAC port
    Note: The NW-WM1Z and NW-WM1A Walkman players may not be available in all countries or regions.

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 12:

  • Adds a function to allow DSD5.6MHz/1bit content to be playable on USB1 or USB2
  • Resolves an issue where the high pass filter, low pass filter and time alignment do not remain when the ignition (accessory power supply) turns on

How to Check if You Need the Update

IMPORTANT: The Remote Control (RM-X261) will be required to perform the firmware update.

  1. Power on the Digital Media Player.
  2. Press and hold the SOURCE button (SRC is printed on the button) for 1 second to turn the source off and display the clock.
  3. On the Remote Control, press the MENU button.
  4. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until SET GENERAL is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until SET FIRMWARE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FW VERSION is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  7. If the version is 12, you do not need to update the firmware.

Important Notes

  • WARNING! To prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process, it is recommended to perform this update with the car (or boat) engine running. Before starting the update process with the car (or boat) engine running, be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place and keep the engine running until the update is complete. This update takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  • This update requires a computer with an Internet connection and a USB storage device.
  • If the AUTO OFF setting was used before updating the firmware, you will need to reset the AUTO OFF setting again after completing the update.
  • If you used the PARENTAL setting of SiriusXM before updating the firmware, you will need to reset the PARENTAL pass code again after completing the update.

  • The user settings, including preset memory on the tuner and all sound settings, will remain after installing this update, but the Bluetooth connection history will be cleared.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device

  1. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    Note:The USB storage device must be formatted for FAT16 or FAT32 file systems.
  2. Ensure your computer is connected to the Internet.
  3. Download the RSXGS9_v12.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference) on your computer.
  4. Open the temporary or download directory in which you just downloaded the update, right click the RSXGS9_v12.zip file, and then click Extract all.
  5. In the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders screen, make sure the box next to Show extracted files when complete is checkmarked, then click the Extract button.
  6. In the RSXGS9_v12 folder that opens, copy the UPDATE folder to the USB storage device:
    • For Microsoft® Windows® operating systems: Right-click the UPDATE folder, from the menu click Send To..., and then click the drive (EX: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB storage device. The folder will be copied onto your USB storage device.
    • For Apple® Mac OS X® operating systems: Drag and drop the UPDATE folder to the root directory of the USB device.
    Note:This update will not be performed if the folder is not copied to the root directory of the USB storage device or if the name of the folder is modified.
  7. Remove the USB storage device from your computer.
  8. Continue to the next section.

Updating the Firmware of the Main Unit with Your USB Storage Device

  • Please follow all steps carefully.
  • This update procedure (in your car or boat) takes approximately 1 minute to complete.
  • WARNING! To prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process, it is recommended to perform this update with the car (or boat) engine running. Before starting the update process with the car (or boat) engine running, be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place and keep the engine running until the update is complete. This update takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  1. Power on the Digital Media Player.
  2. Press and hold the SOURCE button (SRC is printed on the button) for 1 second.
  3. On the Remote Control, press the MENU button.
  4. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until GENERAL is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FIRMWARE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until UPDATE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  7. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until YES is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  8. When the message Insert USB is displayed, connect the USB storage device to the USB1 port on the front panel of the main unit.
    IMPORTANT: The USB update function will only work with the USB storage device connected to the USB1 port on the front panel.
  9. The update process will begin and should finish in approximately 5 minutes.
    Note:When the Update is finished, the unit will restart automatically.
  10. Confirm that the firmware version is updated to version 12 using the steps provided below.

After confirming the version, the firmware update is complete.

Confirm the Firmware Version has Successful Updated

  1. Power on the Digital Media Player.
  2. Press and hold the SOURCE button (SRC is printed on the button) for 1 second to turn the source off and display the clock.
  3. On the Remote Control, press the MENU button.
  4. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until SET GENERAL is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until SET FIRMWARE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FW VERSION is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
  7. If the version is 12, the firmware updated successfully.
