ILCE-7SM2 Camera Firmware Update

What Does This Do?

This utility updates the camera firmware to version 3.00 and provides the following benefits:

  • Adds the Auto Pwr OFF Temp function
  • Improves operability of the camera:
    • Improves operability when the AF area is set to flexible spot
    • Adds Live View Display into custom button assignment
    • Adds the Set File Name function
  • Supports visible light LED with external flash for AF (HVL-F45RM External Flash)
  • Improves release time lag when wireless flash is used
  • Improves image quality when Long Exposure NR setting is OFF
  • Improves overall stability of the camera

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in this update.

IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

Determine if Your Camera Needs the Update

This update is only for ILCE-7SM2 cameras that currently have a firmware version 2.20 or lower. If your camera firmware version is already version 3.00, this update is not necessary.

Check the version of your camera firmware:

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the Menu screen, select Setup.
  4. At the Setup screen, select Version.
  5. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

  6. If the current firmware version is 3.00 or higher, the camera does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® ILCE-7SM2 camera. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING: This Digital Camera System Software Update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process, downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from SystemSoftwareUpdater Menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.
  • WARNING: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • CPU: Intel® processor (Core Solo™ and Core Duo processors are no longer supported)
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 600 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port
      • Apple® Mac OSX® versions 10.10 - 10.12
    • Camera power supply:
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the firmware update, it's recommended that you use a fully charged NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW20 AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
      • WARNING: Do not remove the battery pack or AC adapter during the update process, otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power loss.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and Update the Firmware

  • WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from SystemSoftwareUpdater Menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.
  • WARNING: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
  • Please disconnect all other devices from the camera before upgrading.
  1. Download the Update_ILCE7SM2V300.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_ILCE7SM2V300.dmg file.
    Note: Do not connect the camera to the computer yet.
  3. On the desktop, double-click the Update_ILCE7SM2V300 icon.
  4. Double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater System Software Updater Icon icon.
  5. At the Password prompt screen, enter the Username and Password for the administrative account, and then click OK.

  6. Remove the memory card from the camera.
  7. Power on the camera.
  8. On the camera, press the Menu button, select Setup, and then USB Connection and ensure Mass Storage is selected.

  9. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable, USB Mode will appear on the LCD screen of the camera.
  10. WARNING: Do not remove the battery pack or AC adapter during the update process, otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power loss.

  11. At the System Software Updater screen, click Next.

  12. At the next screen, check the version number at the lower left of the screen.

    Note: If the current version is 3.00, your camera does not need this update. Stop the USB connection and click Finish. You may disconnect the USB cable and power off the camera. Please remove the battery or disconnect the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.
  13. If the current version is 2.20 or lower, click Next to continue the system software update.
  14. When the following screen is displayed, the camera is automatically reset.

    Note: Never power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while updating.
  15. After the camera is automatically reset, the following screen appears and the update starts. The progress bar appears while updating (approximately 15 minutes).

  16. When the update is completed, the camera will automatically restart. Make sure the camera is turned on and wait until the LCD screen reappears, then click Finish.

    Note: After restarting, the message Recovering data Please wait... may rarely display. This is normal, please wait until this message goes away.

  17. You may now disconnect the USB cable.

Check the Firmware Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the Menu screen, select Setup.
  4. At the Setup screen, select Version.
  5. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

  6. If the current firmware version is 3.00, the firmware update was successful.
    Note: If the firmware version number is not 3.00, please download and install the firmware update again.
