ILCE-7RM2 System Software Update

What Does This Do?

This utility updates the camera firmware to version 4.00 and provides the following benefits:

  • Adds the Auto Pwr OFF Temp function
  • Improves operability of the camera:
    • Improves operability when the AF area is set to flexible spot
    • Adds Live View Display into custom button assignment
    • Adds the Set File Name function
  • Supports visible light LED with external flash for AF (HVL-F45RM External Flash)
  • Improves release time lag when wireless flash is used
  • Optimizes exposure algorithm during focusing when Live View Display is set for Setting Effect OFF
  • Improves image quality when Long Exposure NR setting is OFF
  • Improves overall stability of the camera

IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

Determine if Your Camera Needs the Update

This update only applies to ILCE-7RM2 cameras that currently have a firmware version 3.30 or lower.

If your camera firmware version is already version 4.00, this update is not necessary.

Check the version of your camera firmware:

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the Menu screen, use the control wheel to select Setup, and then select Version.

  4. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

  5. Note:If the current firmware version is 4.00 or higher, the camera does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • WARNING: This utility is only for use with the Sony® ILCE-7RM2 camera. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from SystemSoftwareUpdater menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • CPU: Intel® processor (Core Solo™ and Core Duo processors are no longer supported)
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 600 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port
      • Apple® Mac OSX® versions 10.10 - 10.12
    • Camera power supply:
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the System Software update, it's recommended that you use a fully charged NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW20 AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
      • Detach the vertical grip (sold separately) before updating system software.
      • WARNING: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.

    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
      • IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Prepare the Camera for the Firmware Update

  1. Remove the memory card from the camera
  2. Power on the camera.
  3. Press the Menu button.
  4. At the Menu screen, use the Control Wheel to select Setup, select USB Connection, and then ensure that Mass Storage is selected.

Download and Update the Firmware

    WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from SystemSoftwareUpdater menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.

    IMPORTANT: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.

  1. Download the Update_ILCE7RM2V400.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_ILCE7RM2V400.dmg file. The file is expanded.
    Note: Do not connect the camera to the computer yet.
  3. Double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater System Software Updater Icon icon.
  4. At the Password prompt screen, enter the Username and Password for the administrative account, and then click OK.

  5. Power on the camera.
  6. Verify that Mass Storage is selected in the USB Connection setting of the camera:
    1. On the camera, press the Menu button.
    2. At the Menu screen, use the control wheel to select Setup, select USB Connection, and then ensure that Mass Storage is selected.

  7. Ensure the memory card is removed from the camera.
  8. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
    Once connected, USB Mode is displayed on the camera screen.
  9. WARNING: Do not remove the battery pack or AC adapter during the update process, otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power loss.

  10. At the System Software Updater screen, click Next.

  11. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    Note: If the current version is 4.00, your camera does not need this update. Stop the USB connection and click Finish. You may disconnect the USB cable and power off the camera. Please remove the battery or disconnect the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.
  12. If the current version is 3.30 or lower, click Next to continue the system software update.
  13. When the following screen is displayed, the camera is automatically reset.

  14. WARNING: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.

    Note: Depending on the OS version you are using, a loading icon may be displayed.

  15. After the camera is automatically reset, the following screen appears and the update starts. The progress bar appears while updating (approximately 15 minutes).

  16. When the update is completed, the camera will automatically restart. Make sure the camera is turned on and wait until the LCD screen reappears, then click Finish.

  17. Note: After automatically restarting, the message Recovering data. Please wait... may appear on the camera screen.

    If this message appears on your camera screen, do not disconnect USB cable, please wait until the message is no longer displayed.

  18. When the update has finished, disconnect the USB cable.

Check the Firmware Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the Menu screen, use the control wheel to select Setup, and then select Version.

  4. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

  5. If the current firmware version is 4.00, the firmware update was successful.
    Note: If the firmware version number is not 4.00, please download and install the firmware update again.
