DSLR-A100 Firmware Update

What Does This Do?
This utility updates the camera firmware to version 1.04 and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 1.02:

  • Adds support for the camera to display focal length information about an attached Zoom Lens DT 55-200mm F4-5.6.

Additional improvements over original firmware:

  • Addresses the symptom where, in very rare cases, RAW format files may not be opened by the supplied image control software, Picture Motion Browser.
  • Improves image gradation when the shutter speed is 1 second or longer.
  • Improves printed picture quality when the image is printed by Epson® printer under PRINT Image Matching.

Determine Whether or Not this Firmware Update is Needed for Your Camera

This update only applies for DSLR-A100 cameras that currently have firmware version lower than 1.04. If your camera firmware version is already Ver.1.04 or higher, this update is not necessary.

Check the version of your camera firmware:

  1. Slide the POWER switch to the On position.
  2. Press the MENU button, then the LCD monitor displays the menu.
  3. Press the (display) button.

  4. A window will show the firmware version on the LCD monitor.



    - If a Version lower than 1.04 is listed: Please proceed with the steps below to download and perform the firmware update.
  5. - If Version 1.04 or higher is listed: This firmware update is not necessary.
  6. Press the Center button of controller to close the version number display.
Important Notes
  • IMPORTANT: This utility is for Apple® Macintosh® operating systems only. If you are using a computer with a Microsoft® Windows® operating system please go to the DSLR-A100 Camera Firmware Update for Windows page.
  • WARNING!!: This utility is only for use with the Sony® DSLR-A100 camera. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING!!: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 5 MB or more
      • Installed Memory: 32 MB or more
      • A USB port or a or a card slot which is suitable for recording media.
      • Mac OS® 10.1 or higher
    • Camera power supply:
      • When performing the firmware update, use the fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM55H or the AC adapter AC-VQ900AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
        WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        WARNING!!: Update functionality is not guaranteed if you use any other USB cable.
    • Recording media (one of the following):
      • Memory Stick Duo™/Memory Stick PRO Duo™ with capacity of 16MB or more
      • CF (CompactFlash) card with capacity of 16MB or more
      • Microdrive

      Note: The recording media should be formatted with the camera before using it to perform the update. Be sure to backup all pictures and data from the recording media before formatting it.

  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.
Download and Extraction Instructions
  1. Download the DSCA100V104A.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded.
  3. Double-click the "DSCA100V104A.zip" folder to extract the files.
  4. Two files will be extracted:

    • DSCA100.app [File size: 1.73 MB]
    • DSCA100.str [File size: 55.3 KB]

Note: The file extension (.app or .str) may not be displayed depending on your computer configuration.

Please continue with the section below.

Prepare the Recording Media and Copy the Files
  1. Prepare the recording media (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) by formatting it with the camera.
    WARNING!!: The recording media must be formatted in the camera. All data on the recording media, including even protected images, will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored.
  2. Copy the update files to the recording media (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) with one of the procedures below. These procedures vary based on your computer configuration.
    • If your computer has a card slot that is compatible with your recording media:
      1. Insert the camera-formatted media into the card slot of your computer.
      2. Copy the update files (DSCA100.app and DSCA100.str) to the root folder of the recording media.
    • If your computer does not have a card slot that is compatible with your recording media:
      1. Insert a formatted recording media in the camera.
      2. Insert a fully charged battery (NP-FM55H) in the camera, or connect the AC Adaptor to the camera.
      3. Slide the POWER switch to the On position.
      4. Press the MENU button to display the Recording menu.

      5. Select the Setup icon with the controller (), then press the Center button of controller to display the Setup menu.

      6. Please check that "Mass Storage" is set to "Transfer mode" in the Setup menu.



        If it is not, please follow these steps to set it to "Transfer mode".
        1. Select the Transfer mode with controller ( ).
        2. Press the on controller to display the options of Transfer mode.
        3. Select the "Mass Storage" with controller (), then press the Center button of controller.
      7. Press the MENU button to turn off the menu.
      8. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
      9. Copy the update files (DSCA100.app, DSCA100.str) to the root folder of the recording media inserted in the camera.
      10. When copying is finished, disconnect the USB cable.

Update the Firmware

WARNING!!: When performing the firmware update, use fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM55H or the AC adapter AC-VQ900AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately). Do not remove the battery or AC adapter during the firmware updating, otherwise the camera may be permanently damaged.

  1. If it is not already there, insert the formatted recording media (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) into the camera and then slide the POWER switch to the On position.
  2. Press the (playback) button.

  3. The confirmation window appears.

    Note: If the confirmation window does not appear on the LCD:
    • Confirm that the recording media does not have any images stored on it. If there are any images on the media, it cannot be used to update the firmware.
    • Make sure that the update files (DSCA100.app, DSCA100.str) are in the root folder of the recording media.
  4. Use the controller () to highlight "Yes", then press the Center button of controller. The Updating procedure will start.
    Note: "No" will cancel the operation.
  5. When the "Updating-completed" message appears, the updating procedure is complete. Turn the camera off, then remove the recording media.

Check the Firmware Version After Updating
  1. Slide the POWER switch to the On position.
  2. Press the MENU button, then the LCD monitor displays the menu.
  3. Press the (display) button.

  4. A window will show the firmware version on the LCD monitor.

  5. Confirm the version number is now "Ver.1.04".
  6. Press the Center button of controller to close the version number display.
  7. After updating the camera, format the recording media or delete the update files (DSCA100.app, DSCA100.str) from the recording media.
Notes:
  • If the version number is not 1.04, please download and install the firmware update again.
  • If you need assistance or if your camera will not power on, please contact the Customer Service Center in your country.
