Network Media Player Firmware Upgrade

What Does This Do?
The SMP-N100 Network Media player firmware version M05.R.084 is available and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version M05.R.071:

  • Updates BRAVIA® Internet Video to be compatible with YouTube® online service changes.
  • Adds the capability to play 1080/60p video files produced by Sony® cameras.
  • Improves external subtitles when viewing videos in DivX® format.
  • Improves HDMI® connectivity.

Benefits provided by previous upgrades and included in version M05.R.084:

  • Adds support for the Party Streaming™ feature.
  • Adds support for the Renderer feature.

Note: This update is available only by performing a Nework Upgrade. There is no file to download and install.

Check the Current Firmware Version 
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Network Media player is connected.
  2. Power on the Network Media player.
  3. Wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Network Media player will be listed on the television screen.
    Firmware Version
    If the last three digits of the version number are 084 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.
How To Get the Firmware Upgrade 

The SMP-N100 Network Media player firmware can only be upgraded by performing a Network Upgrade.

  • To perform the upgrade you will need to connect the Network Media player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  • Please see the Network Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.

Network Upgrade Instructions 

The SMP-N100 Network Media player firmware can only be upgraded by performing a Network Upgrade.


  • Important Notes

    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Network Media player.
    • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Network Media player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the Network Media player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Network Media player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • In order to perform the network upgrade it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
    • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

  • Firmware Upgrade Instructions

    WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Network Media player to be unresponsive or to require repair.

    Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Network Media player is connected.
    2. Connect the "LAN(100)" terminal on the player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    3. Power on the Network Media player.
    4. If there is a disc in the player, please remove the disc.
    5. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network Update" and then press the ENTER button.
    6. The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
    7. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
    8. The download process starts and the download screen is displayed on the television.
    9. During the download the message "DL */9" is displayed on the television and on the television screen.
      Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the download progress.
    10. After the download is complete, the upgrade starts and "VUP" appears on the television screen.
    11. While the upgrade is installed the message "VUP */9" is displayed on the television screen.
      Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the upgrade progress.
    12. the Network Media player will automatically power off.
    13. Power on the Network Media player
    14. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 084, the firmware upgrade was successful.

  • Network Firmware Upgrade FAQ 

    Q: When running network upgrade, the television displays the message, "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade. A: There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN(100)" terminal on the player and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the Network Media player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address.
      Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    3. Follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.
    Q: The power was shut down during the upgrade process. A: Power on the Network Media player, and then follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.
    Q: The network upgrade process has two parts, first the download and then the upgrade. If, after the download part is finished, the firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running after more than 30 minutes. A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
