What does this do?

This utility updates the Sony Reader (PRS-500) system software to version 1.0.03.07170 and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over system software version 1.0.02.01300:

  • Resolves an issue where, under certain conditions, the battery meter may not correctly indicate the proper charge level
  • Resolves an issue where the reader may not successfully return from sleep mode

Improvements over the original system software:

  • Longer Battery life during audio playback
    NOTE: Actual battery life may vary based on usage pattern, product settings, battery and environmental conditions.
  • Faster transfer speeds when using 4GB or larger Memory Stick® media
  • Improved handling of white bands on the audio playback screen

Important Notes
  • The software update process takes about 3 to 4 minutes.
  • General instructions for installing updates to the Sony Reader are available in the Operations Guide.
  • During the installation of this file, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.
Download and Installation Instructions
  1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  2. Download the PRS-500 Updater 1.0.03.07170.exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  3. Connect the Sony Reader to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
  4. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the PRS-500 Updater 1.0.03.07170.exe file to begin the installation.
    WARNING!!: Do not disconnect the Sony Reader during the update process.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
    NOTE: The Sony Reader will automatically restart during the update process.
  6. After the software update is complete, an "Update Completed" message is displayed.
  7. Click the "X" to close the update utility.

After the Sony Reader restarts, and the Reader displays an update complete message, the installation of the Sony Reader (PRS-500) Update is complete.
Alternate Installation Method Instructions
  1. Within the CONNECT™ Reader software, click the "Help" menu command.
  2. At the "Help" menu, click "Check for Updates".
  3. Click OK to download the update.
Installation Verification (optional)
  1. On the Sony Reader, press and hold the "Menu" button until the Home menu opens.
  2. At the "Home" menu, use the arrow buttons to select "Settings," then press ENT.
  3. At the "Settings" menu, move to select "About", then press ENT.
  4. At the "About" screen, version "1.0.03.07170" should be displayed.
    NOTE: If the version is not 1.0.03.07170, please re-download the update, and then perform the software update again.
