What is VAIO Update?
The VAIO Update utility helps you keep your VAIO® computer up to date by regularly checking the Sony eSupport Web site for important software updates and information for your specific VAIO computer model.
Why is VAIO Update important for me?
VAIO Update makes it easy to keep your VAIO computer up to date by actively informing you of recommended and important updates and by guiding you to the exact location where you can find them.
How is VAIO Update different from Windows® Update?
VAIO Update and Windows Update are similar. Both automatically alert you to and allow you to download updated software for your computer. Windows Update primarily offers general updates for the Microsoft® Windows® operating system. VAIO Update, however, checks for software updates for your specific VAIO computer model, including updated Sony software applications, drivers, and utilities. Used together, VAIO Update and Windows Update make it easier to keep the software on your VAIO computer up to date.
How does VAIO Update work?
VAIO Update runs as a background process on your computer, checking the Sony eSupport Web site for updates once each day. If it finds an update, a balloon message appears at the Taskbar Notification area of your computer display. Click the balloon message to go to the update page on the Sony eSupport Web site, from which you can download the update.
I seldom or never connect my computer to the Internet. Should I use VAIO Update?
If your computer is never connected to the Internet, VAIO Update offers no benefits, and you may want to turn it off. (See Can I turn off VAIO Update? for instructions.) For best results, connect your computer to the Internet for at least five minutes each day to allow VAIO Update to check for updates.
Does having VAIO Update running on my computer slow it down?
VAIO Update uses an extremely small amount of memory and processor resources and only actively connects to the Sony eSupport Web site once a day. You should not notice any effect on the speed of your computer, and your other software applications should not be affected.
Why does the VAIO Update balloon keep appearing?
The balloon message appears to inform you of updates. It appears only when VAIO Update has found updates for your model on the Sony eSupport Web site.
What information does Sony collect when VAIO Update connects to the Sony eSupport Web site?
The only information collected by Sony from VAIO Update is the IP (Internet protocol) address of your computer, which is collected for purposes of monitoring the volume of traffic to the Sony eSupport Web site. This information is not used for any other purpose.
How does Sony direct me to the appropriate page for my VAIO computer model if the Sony eSupport Web site does not collect the name of my computer model?
Your model name is known only to the VAIO Update utility running on your computer, which uses this information to direct you to the correct Web page for your model. This information is not passed to Sony by the VAIO Update utility.
Why does the VAIO Update Options balloon message appear the first time I start my new VAIO computer?
Sony wants to make you aware of the benefits of VAIO Update and wants to make sure you know that it will be running on your computer in the background.
What updates will I get from VAIO Update?
VAIO Update provides driver and software updates for Sony and third-party software that was supplied with your VAIO computer. VAIO Update may also alert you to important informational notices about the use of your computer.
Will VAIO Update work if I am inside a network firewall? What ports does VAIO Update use?
VAIO Update will work through most firewalls that allow access to the Web. VAIO Update communicates with the Sony eSupport Web site over port 80, the standard port for accessing Web sites.
Can I turn off VAIO Update?
